My name is Gabriel Villarrubia, I am el Pulpo Negro, I am the Fiend, I am el Diablo, but I like to think I am mostly a Libertine. What is a Libertine? Webster’s dictionary describes a libertine as One who acts without moral restraint; a dissolute person - One who defies established religious precepts; a freethinker. adj. Morally unrestrained; dissolute. I love everything about that description, but is that really me? Maybe not totally, but its a good goal, and I’ll die trying to always live up to it. What I know I am is a man desperately in love with his wife Andrea, and the life we have carved out for ourselves in a little town in Mexico, called Sayulita. We took our dream of living somewhere simpler, kinder and slower and made this life for ourselves since our move from San Francisco in 2006. What I am also, and equally defined by, is a father to my gloriously awesome son, Maximo Lobo. The light of my life, my restart on this planet. Without him, I cannot be me - I just did not know this till I met him. What else am I? I am an artist, a musician, wanna-be surfer, a drinker, a joker, a midnight toker, lover of all excesses I can still manage at this point in my story, and also, but not limited to, an obsessive documentarian of this life we have built. My previous diary was called the Blah Blah Blog, and you can track the torrid trail that led us to this diatribe in its words and pictures - but that is that, and this is this… this is my journal reborn. This is The Libertine’s Journal, and these are my Libertine Teeth.
